The Panel Van was originally intended as a 'sedan delivery' body style. The combination of cargo space and customisable interiors made the panel van appeal to a variety of professions from painters to the police force. By the 1970s the Panel Van had become popular with the Australian youth leisure market. Owners would often airbrush mural art on the exterior and fit out the cargo bay. The 'big 3' manufacturers made youth styled Panel Vans with the Holden Sandman, the Chrysler Drifter and the Ford Sundowner. Although Panel Vans are known for the surf culture, the 'youth' Panel Vans were far too expensive for your average surfer.
The Sundowner was available in 3 body styles the Escort, Transit and Falcon. The Falcon Sundowner was based on the Falcon 500 Van but included options reserved for GS Hardtop, with comprehensive dash instrumentation, 'NASA' bonnet scoops, slotted sport rims and driving lights. The side protection mouldings and rear side glass was removed from the Sundowner and replaced with distinctive loud side decals. The standard Sundowner 4.1 litre engine was able to be upgraded to either a 4.91 or a 5.81 with the GT Power Pack, the Power Pack also included 4 wheel disc brakes and limited slip differential.
