Description
The roots of the Soviet marines go back to the beginning of the 18th century, and these infantry during World War II took part in several important battles of that war on the Eastern Front. During the Cold War (1945-1991), the Soviet Marines were not disbanded, but like many other branches of the armed forces, it was expanded. In 1961 it was reformed and a regiment, later a brigade, of the marines was added to each of the Soviet Navy's fleets. These units were also equipped with light amphibious tanks and armored wheeled transports. In 1989, the Soviet marines numbered about 18,000 people, formed into one division and several (probably four) independent brigades. It is worth adding that in the Soviet doctrine, the marines were to operate not only with classic amphibious ships, but also with a large number of hovercraft. After the collapse of the USSR, the marines of the armed forces of the Russian Federation underwent further changes and reforms - especially after 2000.
