Description

The USS Kidd (DDG-993) was an American missile destroyer, the keel of which was laid in 1978, was launched in August 1979 and entered service with the US Navy in 1981. The total length of the ship was 171 meters and a width of 16.8 meters. Full displacement reached about 9,800 tons, and maximum speed - up to 33 knots. At the time of the launch, the destroyer was armed with: two 127 mm Mark 45 cannons, two 20 mm Vulcan Phalanx sets, two Mk.26 2-rail rocket launchers, and a single 8-rail ASROC rocket-torpedo launcher. The ship could also operate two SH-3 Seaking or one SH-2 Seasprite helicopters.

The USS Kidd (DDG-993) was built on the basis of the plans of the Spruance-class destroyers and showed very similar combat capabilities to ships of this type. It was originally commissioned by Iran and was originally built under the name Kouroush. However, due to the revolution in Iran, which resulted in the overthrow of the pro-American shah and the seizure of power by Ayatollah Khomeini, the ship was detained in the USA and incorporated into the US Navy. During its service, the USS Kidd performed the role of an air-cover ship for ship teams, and was also adapted to operate in tropical conditions. Already in 1982, it operated in the Mediterranean Sea, in the Lebanon region. In the period 1983-1985 he participated in maritime maneuvers, including international ones. In 1991, the unit took an active part in Operation Desert Storm. The USS Kidd was decommissioned in 1998 and sold to Taiwan in 2004, where it serves as ROCS Tso-Ying.
