Description
Description
Severn is a type name for British modern large lifeboats. The first unit of this type was put into service in 1996, and the production of this type of boat ended in 2005. A single unit of this type is 17 m long and 5.5 m wide. The drive is provided by two diesel engines Caterpillar 3412 TA with 1250 HP each. The crew consists of six people. In total, 46 boats of this type were built.
The Severn boats were built by the Berthon Boat Company for the British Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which is one of the largest and oldest maritime rescue organizations in the UK. Boats replaced Arun-type units in service. Compared to their predecessors, they were slightly longer and wider than them, they are characterized by better seaworthiness, but most of all they have much more powerful engines, allowing them to achieve a significantly better top speed by approx. 6-7 knots. Composite materials were also used to a much greater extent in the construction of Severn units. Boats of this type also have modern electronic equipment, especially navigation.
