Description

The Type 60 APC is a Japanese tracked armored personnel carrier from the post-war period. The vehicle was powered by a single Mitsubishi 8HA21WT engine with a power of 230 hp . The first prototypes of the vehicle were created in the second half of the 1950s, and serial production was carried out in 1960-1972. Approximately 420 vehicles of this type were built in its course. The armament was two machine guns: one 12.7 mm and one 7.62 mm

Works on The Type 60 began in 1956 in response to a demand from the Japanese Self-Defense Forces for a new armored personnel carrier. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Komatsu Limited were responsible for the development of the new vehicle and its production. Finally, a relatively simple in design and operation vehicle was created, enabling the transport of up to 6 landing troops, with armor ranging from 8 to 13 mm, which provided protection against small-caliber fire and shrapnel from artillery shells. Based on the Type 60 chassis, several specialized versions were created, including: SV-60 (self-propelled mortar), SU-60 ATGM (anti-tank version with KAM-3D guided missiles) or Type 75 (technical support vehicle). Type 60 vehicles were replaced by Type 73 vehicles from the 1970s, and by 2006 they were completely scrapped.
