Modern Israeli Defense Forces Israel Defense Forces, abbreviated as IDF, was established in 1948. Airmobile / parachute units are a very important elect of the land forces. They were used with great success during the Suez Crisis (1956) and - especially - during the Six-Day War (1967), often paving the way for mechanized and armored units. At present, the majority of Israeli parachute troops are concentrated in 98th Parachute Division Ha-Esz (formed in 1984), which consists of the 35th Parachute Brigade, special forces units, and would be reinforced with two additional parachute brigades after mobilization.
