The RMS Titanic

Few ships have captured the world's imagination quite like the Titanic. More than a century after its tragic maiden voyage, the RMS Titanic remains one of the most famous and recognisable ships in history.

Built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast for the White Star Line, Titanic was launched on 31 May 1911. At 269 metres long and weighing more than 46,000 gross tons, she was one of the largest and most luxurious ships of her time.

Titanic departed Southampton on 10 April 1912 on her maiden voyage to New York, carrying 2,224 people. On 15 April, after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic, the ship sank with the loss of 1,517 lives. The disaster led to major changes in international maritime safety regulations and cemented Titanic's place in history.
