Description
The Typhoon program commenced in 2010 to develop a new family of Russian modular Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) armored vehicles. As such, the vehicles would share commonality of parts/components and could be easily produced and fitted to perform a large number of duties and missions. The first vehicles came into service in approximately 2014 and consist of a few different base sizes and classes. They are built by subsidiary companies of JSC KAMAZ (K-4386, K-53949 & K-63968) and the GAZ Group (Ural-63095 and Ural-63099).
The 4x4 KAMAZ-4386 Typhoon-K VDV (Airborne Forces Vehicle) is based upon the earlier, and larger Typhoon K-53949 Mine Protected Armored Vehicle design. The VDV's purpose is to provide Russian airborne troops a light, fast and protected vehicle which is capable of air-droppable insertion. It is reportedly even able to be dropped with troops inside. The base design was initially only required to carry troops and/or cargo. However, the modular design is flexible enough to also be used in other roles such as command/control, escort/convoy protection, fire support, military policing, and reconnaissance. Due to that flexibility a number of variants have been built, although as of the time of writing (2020), not all of them have been put into service. Other variants seen are the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Vehicle, MTR-K Tactical Reconnaissance Vehicle, PVO Air Defense Vehicle and Self-Propelled Mortar Carrier.
