Description
The Kaman HH-43 Huskie was an American multi-purpose helicopter with a fixed-wheel undercarriage, in a very unusual, counter-rotating twin-rotor system (the so-called Flettner system). The drive - in the HH-43F version - was provided by a single Lycoming T53 turboshaft engine with 860 HP. The flight of the first prototype took place in 1953.
The HH-43 Huskie was developed as a grassroots initiative by Kaman Aircraft in a very unusual arrangement of two counter-rotating rotors, like a development of machines developed since 1945. However, the US Navy quickly became interested in the new helicopter, and later also the Marine Corps and the USAAF. In the course of serial production, many development versions of this helicopter were created, such as the OH-43D (observation version), UH-43C (multi-purpose version) or H-43A (rescue and firefighting version). The last development version was the HH-43F. HH-43 helicopters were exported to several countries, mainly to Iran, Burma and Pakistan. They also took part in the Vietnam War (1964 / 1965-1975).
